Career Dog Training
activity. This training is meant for you and your team of
dogs to enjoy the winter snow through sledding
activities. However, this type of dog training
necessitates the correct set of equipment. Dog sleds
are generally expensive. There are a lot of sellers who
would take advantage of sledding newbies and charge
a lot for a sled that is not even top quality. It is
inadvisable to use wooden sleds, which could be way
expensive, but not that durable.

Of course, not every dog can qualify to be a sled dog. In
sled dog training, it is important to choose the right dog
breed. The typical breeds of dog ideal for snow
sledding are the Alaskan Husky, Greenland Dog,
Siberian Husky, Canadian Eskimo Dog, Alaskan
Malamute, Chinook, Eurohound, and the Seppala
Siberian Sled Dog. However, there are also mixed
breeds that have been used in sledding purposes, case
in point being the fancy poodle.

In
sled dog training, it is best to train the dogs during
the fall, before the snow has begun to set over the
grounds. Training on hard cement or gravel pavement
is not advisable as this might add pressure to the dogs
and cause injuries. Training on soft ground is most
suitable. Also, it is best to train dogs in the early
morning sunshine or during sunset. During noontime,
or under the harsh sunlight, the dogs could get easily
dehydrated, seeing that sled dogs have thicker fur than
most dog breeds.

The type of collar used for the dogs is also of great
essence in sled dog training. An adjustable collar with
buckles is the most ideal type of collar. This way, you
have the liberty to adjust the collar as the need arises,
or whenever your sled dog begins to feel discomfort.
Choke collars are definitely not a good idea. As the sled
training progresses, the dog might choke on the collar
and the driver may not notice this immediately during
the course of the sled run.

As the
sled dog training continues to accelerate, it is
important for the sled dogs to be hydrated at all times.
Being dehydrated will cause the dogs to lose stamina
and agility. Water pans should be made ready after
every run, and if possible, you can choose to bring a 5
gallon water tank with you, during each training day.
Puppies as young as 3 months can be trained to be
sled dogs. It is just advisable not to over work the dogs
and not to settle into monotonous schedules.  For
variety, you can train the dogs every other day, or for 2
days straight then off again for a day or two.

For puppies, a mile or two per training period would be
a suitable mushing distance. Then you can gradually
build up to more than a mile as the training progresses.
Sled dog training is definitely one activity that you and
your team of dogs will enjoy, even with the chill and
winter blues.
