Knowing When to Give a Sick Dog Medicine
Your dog is sick and has multiple symptoms and you
are looking for some sick dog medicine to fix the
problem. This is a route to disaster for both you and
your dog. Never use medication used for humans
unless your Vet specifically prescribes it for your dog.
You can end up killing or maiming your dog with the
wrong kind of medication.
Self diagnosing a medical condition in a dog is difficult
for a Vet much less for an ordinary dog owner. Unless
your dog can talk, you can only guess what is wrong.
However sometimes dogs will be able to solve their
health problems themselves.
If your dog has been eating grass and then regurgitates
the grass followed by gagging then it is best to leave the
dog alone. This is no time to give your sick dog
medicine. This is normal behavior for a dog with a
stomach problem. Just make sure you provide the dog
with fresh water and keep them outside under
observation. It normally takes a couple of hours to
resolve the problem. You should take the time to inspect
the regurgitated material to assure that there is no
blood. If there is then you need to get to your vet as
soon as possible.
Dogs also do a good job of cleaning scrapes and cuts
fairly well. They use their tongue to work the wound and
will keep it clean allowing it to heal. Any signs of
infection should be taken seriously and will require a
trip to the Vet. If you place a topical antibiotic on the
wound the dog will lick it off. Ingesting this medicine
may lead to additional unwanted problems.
If you are in the field and your dog does sustain a cut
then you can use EMT gel to stop the bleeding and
reduce pain. Use a tee shirt or some other covering to
protect the wound from the dog’s instinct to clean the
wound. You can purchase EMT Gel at pet stores, Vets
Offices and some drug stores. It is great sick dog
medicine and also a good product for treating the cuts
of the dog handler as well.
There is one exception to giving a sick dog medicine.
When it comes to pain medication for dogs goes it is
almost always safe to use baby aspirin to reduce stress
and pain. It is best to give the aspirin with food or a treat
to protect the stomach. In fact baby aspirin is frequently
used to treat dogs with arthritis pain.
Otherwise you should always consult your Vet before
giving any sick dog medicine. It is always better to be
safe than sorry.
